About This Procedure:

Coronary angioplasty repairs a blood vessel that supplies blood to the heart muscles.  The blood vessel may be blocked or narrowed due to a buildup of fat and calcium deposits.  A thin tube with a balloon attached is inserted through an artery guided into the narrowed vessel. The balloon is inflated and compresses the fat and calcium buildup to open the blood vessel and a thin flexible tube, called a stent, is inserted to prevent further narrowing of the vessel.

This particular outpatient procedure is to treat a single damaged blood vessel. The cost to treat a blocked artery can vary by many thousands of dollars depending on the hospital and if the surgery is done in an outpatient setting, which is common, or if it is done inpatient.

An alternative to angioplasty is bypass surgery in which a blood vessel is taken from another part of the body or a nearby blood vessel is rerouted to bypass the failing blood vessel.
