About This Procedure:

Mastectomy is surgery that removes a breast to treat breast cancer. A simple mastectomy removes the breast tissue and, usually, the nipple. A radical mastectomy also involves removal of most of the lymph nodes under the arm and sometimes the lining over the chest muscles.

About half of all mastectomies are done outpatient and the patient returns home the same day. The price of beast surgery when done outpatient is thousands of dollars less compared to doing it as inpatient surgery.

Patient treatment preferences matter a lot with breast cancer care because there are treatment options. Lumpectomy surgery, to remove cancerous breast tissue, plus radiation is a more conservative approach than a full mastectomy in which the entire breast is removed. Mastectomy is preferred by women who are most concerned about the possibility of the cancer returning later.
