About This Procedure:
A prostate tissue sample is taken to test for prostate cancer in men usually as a follow-up to an abnormal finding from an earlier test like a rectal exam. This tissue sample is called a prostate biopsy. A probe is placed into the rectum and an ultrasound device, using sound waves, takes pictures of the rectum and prostate gland. These ultrasound views are used to look for signs of prostate tumors or other abnormalities and to guide needles to take the tissue sample that then is sent to a test lab.
The procedure’s price varies a lot as it can be done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department. If prostate cancer is suspected this is an important test to check for cancer.
