About This Procedure:
The non-cancerous tumor around the prostate is completely removed In this prostatectomy surgery. The procedure is done by making small cuts in the belly and using a scope, a thin lighted tube with a camera and the surgical tool; or by making a larger cut in the belly to do the surgery.
The surgery opens the flow of urine by removing tissue that is pressing into the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder. Removing this tissue can help with problems like frequent need to urinate, weak flow, dribbling or slow urination, and incontinence -- lack of control in holding urine.
This particular prostate surgery is done in the hospital with a short hospital stay to recover. It is an expensive procedure – often a choice when other treatments, including medications, are unsuccessful. There are alternatives procedures, which can be less damaging to the nearby tissue, including ones that use lasers or heat to destroy the extra tissue.
