About This Procedure:

A prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is a cancer screening test.  Blood is drawn by inserting a needle into the crux of the arm and the sample is sent to a test lab.  PSA is a protein made by a man’s prostate gland.  An abnormally high PSA level in the blood can be a sign of prostate cancer or a noncancerous condition like an enlarged prostate.

This blood test is less expensive than many lab tests. Some insurance plans fully cover the cost as part of men’s preventive health coverage.  Patients and their doctor should discuss the test’s pros and cons as it is most valuable for those who are at higher risk for prostate cancer based on family history, race and diet.  Often prostate cancer purposefully is left untreated -- in many men it grows slowly and is not damaging to their health.  With or without this blood test, a digital rectal exam, in which the doctor checks for bumps on the prostate, is an important part of prostate and rectal cancer screening for older men.
