About This Procedure:

A transvaginal ultrasound uses sound waves to take pictures of the baby.  A probe is placed in the vagina and the pictures are viewed on a computer screen.  The ultrasound can detect potential problems like birth defects, show the baby’s position and estimate the baby's due date and sex.

This particular ultrasound test is done during the first trimester -- usually at about 20 weeks of pregnancy; it can be done later in the pregnancy as needed.

The procedure’s price varies a lot as it can be done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department.  This procedure takes about 15-20 minutes; you return home the same day.
