About This Procedure:

A salpingo-oophorectomy surgery removes one or both of the ovaries and fallopian tubes.  The procedure is done with a hysteroscope that is passed into the body through the vagina up to the ovaries and fallopian tubes.  The surgical tools are inside the scope which is a thin lighted tube with a camera.

The surgery is used to treat ovarian or uterine cancer or to prevent cancer if a woman is at higher risk due to family history or other factors.

The surgery is done outpatient and the patient returns home the same day.  Patients can save money by shopping for this service as there may be many outpatient centers locally that offer this care.  A salpingo-oophorectomy can be done at the same time as a hysterectomy.
