About This Procedure:
Knee replacement surgery is done to relieve knee pain and repair damaged knee joints. The surgeon cuts away damaged bone and cartilage around the kneecap and replaces it with a metal or plastic joint. This surgery improves motion for people who feel knee pain when walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs, or even when at rest.
Knee joint replacement is very expensive – the price you pay can be more than double depending on the hospital. Most of the cost differences are due to hospital prices but other aspects, like the type of artificial joint, affect the cost. For some patients, the surgery can be done outpatient and home the same day; though for most patients a short hospital stay is needed.
