Hip Replacement Surgery: Outpatient

Total Hip Replacement: Outpatient

About This Procedure:

Hip replacement surgery is done to relieve hip pain and repair damaged hip joints. The surgeon cuts away damaged bone and cartilage around the hip and replaces it with a metal or plastic joint.  This surgery improves motion for people who feel hip pain when walking, climbing stairs, and getting in and out of chairs or even when at rest.

Hip joint replacement is very expensive – the prices can be more than double depending upon the hospital. Most of the cost differences are due to hospital prices but other aspects, like the type of artificial joint, affect the cost.

This particular hip surgery is done in a hospital outpatient center.  Thought most patients have the surgery inpatient with a short hospital stay, more patients are being treated outpatient and home the same day.
