About This Procedure:
An echocardiogram creates a picture of the heart using sound waves called ultrasounds. A gel is rubbed on the chest to sharpen the pictures of the heart then a probe is pressed on the chest to project a picture of your heart on a computer screen. The test is used to check that the heart's pumping and blood flow are normal, to see the heart's size and shape, and look for problems like blood clots.
The test's cost varies a lot – the price can be more than double depending upon the location of the service; it often costs less when done in a doctor’s office.
There are other techniques to get images of the heart – like a cardiac MRI – but they are much more costly and generally only considered if results from other tests are cause for a more detailed evaluation.
