About This Procedure:
An eye exam is a check-up of the eyes’ health. The eyes are tested for disease like glaucoma and cataracts; the cornea’s shape for signs of astigmatism; and the flow of blood to the eyes for signs of diabetes or narrowing of the blood vessels.
This particular eye exam concerns eye health and checking for disease – it does not include a vision test, called refraction, which is used to decide on an eyeglass prescription. Checking vision can be done in the same office visit but billed separately and may add $25 or more to the price. When you go just for a vision test, like at a retail eyewear store, it often costs $75 or more.
Eye exams, which are done in the doctor’s office, are included in most health insurance plans. For people who have separate vision care insurance, in addition to the vision test coverage the insurance covers a portion of the cost for hardware like frames, lens and contact lenses.

Included In This Price:
The price covers just this one service – often done in the office by a practitioner. This price does not include any other care like tests or medications.
