About This Procedure:
A colonoscopy uses a scope to evaluate and treat disorders of the rectum and colon. The colonscope, a tube with a video camera and light, is passed up the rectum to view the large intestines. The procedure is used to check for colon cancer, tissue growths in the colon, causes of stomach pain, blood in the stool and other bowel problems.
This particular procedure includes removing small tissue growths that are found during the procedure as a colon cancer prevention step. Though most of these growths, called polyps, are harmless some can develop into cancer.
The procedure’s price varies a lot as it can be done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department.
