About This Procedure:
A colonoscopy is a scope used to evaluate and treat disorders of the rectum and colon. The colonscope, a tube with a video camera and light, is passed up the rectum to view the large intestines. The procedure is used to check for colon cancer, tissue growths in the colon, causes of stomach pain, blood in the stool and other bowel problems.
The procedure’s price varies a lot as it can be done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department.
An alternative test is a “virtual colonoscopy” which uses X-ray to view the colon. This is a safer test as no scope is passed into the body but it is a newer test and not yet as widely available.
