Breast Lump Removed
Partial Mastectomy
About This Procedure:
Lumpectomy is surgery to remove breast tissue that has cancer cells. One or more of the patient’s nearby lymph nodes also may be removed to check if the cancer has spread. After the surgery, usually there is radiation therapy to kill any remaining cancer cells in the breast.
This type of lumpectomy is done outpatient. Done outpatient, the surgery often is less than half the cost than if it is done inpatient -- some patients stay overnight in the hospital particularly when the surgery includes lymph nodes.
Patient treatment preferences matter a lot with breast cancer care because there are treatment options. Lumpectomy is the primary treatment for women with early stage cancer. Lumpectomy plus radiation is a more conservative approach than a full mastectomy in which the entire breast is removed.
