A mammogram is an x-ray to check the health of breast tissue.   A screening mammogram is done routinely to check for breast cancer in healthy women and for those who have had breast cancer.   In this exam, the woman’s breast is held in place and compressed with a plastic paddle while the x-ray is taken.

The procedure’s price can vary a lot as it is done in a number of settings – like a doctor’s office, an outpatient center, or a hospital outpatient department.

A 3-D mammography, or breast tomosynthesis, is an alternative to a standard mammogram.  This x-ray's three-dimensional image can show a clearer picture of the breast tissue depending upon a woman’s breast and situation.
