Bone Scan
Bone Mineral Density Scan
About This Procedure:
A bone scan is an x-ray that measures bone strength. As we get older our bones lose minerals, like calcium; they become thinner, lighter, and less dense. Weaker bones are more likely to break and can lead to a disease called osteoporosis which is common in women after menopause and in older adults.
This particular scan of the hips, pelvis and spine uses a test called dual energy x-ray. Some insurance plans fully cover the cost as part of preventive health coverage for older people who are at risk for bone loss. The test takes about 5 minutes and is done in a variety of outpatient centers.
