About This Procedure:

A thyroid disorder blood test is required for newborn babies. About 24 hours after birth, usually in the hospital, a blood sample is taken for the lab test. The thyroid, which is a gland in the neck, produces a hormone that is key for healthy growth and development.

The most common thyroid disorder, congenital hypothyroidism, means the infant's thyroid hormone level is too low. Newborns with this disorder start a medication treatment immediately.

Most, but not all, health insurance plans cover this screening test at no cost to the family.  Other lab tests often are done with the same blood sample like PKU (phenylketonuria) a disorder in which people can’t easily eat certain foods; these tests also may be covered at no cost.
