About This Procedure:
A blood sugar test to check for pre-diabetes and diabetes, measures the body’s levels of sugar, called glucose, and a hormone called insulin. Glucose is a key source of energy for the body. If your body does not release enough insulin it can lead to diabetes.
A needle is used to take a blood sample from a vein in the crux of the elbow or from a finger prick. The blood sample is sent to a test lab.
Blood sugar tests are inexpensive and available in many places including the doctor’s office, a lab, outpatient centers and pharmacies.
