In gastric bypass surgery the size of the stomach is reduced to limit the amount of food that can be eaten.  The surgeon also makes a new path from the stomach to the digestive system.  Fewer calories and nutrients are absorbed as the food bypasses most of the stomach and part of the intestines.

This weight loss surgery is done in both the inpatient and outpatient settings – the cost is much lower for patients treated outpatient.  This surgery may be an option when other weight-loss efforts, including diet and exercise, have not worked and the patient’s weight is a serious health risk.
